Our Mission

As a Biblical ministry, our motivation is the Great Commandment, and our purpose is the Great Commission. We exist to glorify God by blessing our neighbor through making disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our Vision

Invite

To not only talk or hope of making disciples, but to invite people to become disciples of Christ.
John 1:39,43; Psalm 34:8

Invest

To invest in others as Jesus invested in us.
Philippians 2:5-8

Imagine

Through discipleship, giving people a new story, plot and hero, imagining the possibilities.
John 14-17

Our History

The Church Gathered and Scattered started out as an English Ministry department of Pilgrim Church. Pilgrim Church was founded in 1997 with a vision to spread God's blessing to all nations, as we have received so much. The English Ministry began in 1998 to support the young adults of Pilgrim Church whose primary language was English (rather than Korean), and who preferred a more contemporary worship style. Our pioneers were a small, resilient group of brothers and sisters who gathered for their own service late on Sunday afternoon after serving as youth group teachers in the morning; sometimes there were more people on the praise team than in the pews!

God has been so faithful as our numbers have grown, and our body has evolved and matured. Former youth group students graduated into the English Ministry and became leaders; some are now youth group teachers themselves. We have welcomed many new faces (including more babies and young children) and said farewell to some old ones, who are faithfully serving the Lord in places as far away as Hong Kong, Seoul, and the West Coast. Through all these changes, we have witnessed God at work and actively drawing His people closer to Him.

January 2017, with the blessing and guidance of our parent church, we became an independent church as The Church Gathered and Scattered. We continue on with our mission that wherever we go, and whatever we do, we want to love God and share God's love with others. We look forward to meeting you and growing together in Jesus Christ.

Our Covenant

Having, as we trust, been brought by God's Grace to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to give up ourselves to Him, and having been baptized and confirmed upon our profession of faith, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we do now, relying on His gracious aid, solemnly and joyfully renew our covenant with each other.

We will work and pray for the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

We will walk together in brotherly love, as becomes the members of a Christian Church, exercise an affectionate care and watchfulness over each other, and faithfully admonish and entreat one another as occasion may require.

We will not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, nor neglect to pray for ourselves and others.

We will endeavor to bring up such as may at any time be under our care, in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and by a pure and loving example to seek the salvation of our family and friends.

We will rejoice at each other’s happiness and endeavor with tenderness and sympathy to bear each other’s burdens and sorrows.

We will seek, by God's aid, to live carefully in the world, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, and remembering that, as we have been voluntarily buried by baptism and raised again from the symbolic grave, so there is on us a special obligation now to lead a new and holy life.

We will work together for the continuance of a faithful evangelical ministry in this church, as we sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines. We will contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations.

We will, if and when we move from this place, as soon as possible, unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.

Our Pastors

Eugene Kim

Senior Pastor
Eugene Kim is a native New Yorker through and through, as witnessed by his upbringing in Queens and thorough education at Stuyvesant High School and SUNY in Buffalo. Before his calling and receiving his M.Div from New York Theological Seminary, Eugene was an IT Consultant and Equity Trader living the cushy life.

Eugene hails from a family that has for five generations served as pastors and is humbled to be following suit. He has been passionate about music and worship ministry in his earlier days and even led a praise team for a time. His calling now is to preach the gospel. His heart is for God's Word, for God has impressed upon him the beauty of His law. Eugene, now, loves to engage all people who are seekers for the truth.

When not in his office (and sometimes in), Eugene can be found attached to his e-reader with a cappuccino or hitting the gym to lift. He is happily married to his wife, Esther, and they now live in NJ. He believes that gospel fruit is part of the natural, extended nature of Christianity and encourages you to participate with him in this incredible discipleship journey.

Paul Jang

Associate Pastor
Paul Jang has spent his childhood in South Korea, England and Parsippany, NJ. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in History and then taught history at a private school in Wisconsin. He received his Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Ministries

invite

The Invite ministries of Fellowship, Community, and Care are focused on integrating newcomers into our church family.

Fellowship

CGS strives to build a great community by holding annual/special events as well as sports activities throughout the year. We see each event as an opportunity for fellowship outside of Sunday Worship and to get our congregants more involved. These events are also a form of outreach to our friends and family who do not attend church regularly, or at all. Throughout the year, we hope to show how God is working through CGS and the community we are trying to build.

Community

We as the church gathered strive to connect, care for, and provide accountability to different life-stage groups. We believe that each individual has unique gifts to contribute to build and sustain a vibrant church community. We hope to connect all members with similar life experiences in true “koinonia” through various activities on a monthly basis. As fellowship builds, we hope to learn how to care for one another as Christ cares for His church. Through these acts of care and as relationships deepen, our affinity groups seek to be a platform for accountability.

Recognizing the various demographics within our Ministry, we have Affinity Groups for singles, married couples, young adults, and college students.

College:
College students are CGS’s precious younger brothers and sisters who are scattered.

Our Mission:
We exist to inspire, nurture and raise disciples of Jesus Christ who will be a blessing in the places to which they were called.

Our Goals:
To Inspire - by building a healthy community, by encouraging through fellowship and worship, and by providing an effective channel of mentorship between the college and greater CGS (Romans 15:4)

To Nurture – By teaching from the scriptures, encouraging growth through Christian education and spiritual disciplines (2 Timothy 3:16)

To Raise Disciples – By providing effective leadership training through retreats, prayer meetings, worship, Bible studies, mentorships, college visitations, and every other resource possible (Matthew 28:19-20).

Care

The care ministry strives to provide Christ-like care for newcomers as well as the existing members of our church. Our team provides a welcoming and loving environment for Sunday Worship by connecting with others, distributing bulletins, tracking attendance, and providing for those in need. We also provide care packages for those that are away from church. Whether you are new to church or have been attending for years, we strive to get to know you and your needs. Please contact Ho Young Lim with any prayer requests.

invest

We use Education and Events to teach and disciple our members to become more Christ-like.

Education

The Christian education of our members is both pastor-taught and laity-led.

New Members Class:
Our New Members class is a six week course taught by the elders, and covers our doctrines and covenant.

Baptism:
Baptism classes are also held for those who wish to publicly proclaim their faith in Christ.

Smaller Groups:
The laity lead weekly smaller groups (max 5) throughout the year. The smaller group setting provides intimacy and accountability. The smaller groups meet in the leaders’ homes or at church and review each week's sermon with followup discussion questions.

Events

The events ministry serves to bring together the CGS congregation through our bi-annual retreats.

We also serve smaller affinity group retreats and events that ultimately serve to spread God's love throughout our community.

Through these events, we want to continue the teaching and learning cycle, by encouraging discipleship and leadership in action.

imagine

Ministries under Imagine include: Media, Missions, and Worship

Media

Our design team takes the Imagine portion of our church vision to heart as we execute the technical production for services, events, and all other digital and print needs of the church. This includes the development of web content by sharing best practices and creative ideas; employing graphic design for all digital and printed materials; executing stage designs per sermon series and special events; creating events, community outreach, and end-of-year highlight videos; and supporting other ministries with technical guidance. Recently we've added livestreaming via YouTube.

Through these various outlets we hope to reach our communities in an effort to glorify Christ and to further the mission and vision of CGS.

Missions

We believe that the church is the instrument of God's mission in the world. We are committed to the Great Commission (Matthew 28) and the call to make disciples of all nations by mobilizing our church members to be missional and serve through local outreach and global missions.

Every year, we send short-term mission teams to Mexico, Japan, Philippines and Kazakhstan. Short-term mission trips give us the chance to partner with local missionaries and support their ministries through the resources and talents God has given our church. We also go to encourage our fellow brothers and sisters all over the world as they serve God's calling in their respective countries.

In addition, we support medium-term and long-term missionaries through prayer and financial support.

Local Outreach:
We serve our local communities in Northern New Jersey and New York City through monthly ministries as well as various volunteer events. We want to be good neighbors who share God's love and bring good news to the poor (Isaiah 61).

Worship

Worship rests upon God’s nature and action. It is not something we initiate through our own efforts. Rather, in worship we respond to the God who has revealed Himself to us through His Word and works. We draw near to the One who has already drawn near to us.

The core of worship is offering ourselves humbly and completely to God. We offer our lives to the One who has given His life for us. As worship leaders, we focus more on who God is and help others encounter the living God in genuine worship through song.

Besides weekly practices for our Sunday Worship service, our teams meet regularly to worship, pray, have fellowship and learn how to better lead our congregation in singing praises.
